Due to the coronavirus, the 2021 Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) GPU Hackathon was held virtually, under the guidance of expert mentors from KISTI, NVIDIA, and the OpenACC Organization. With the goal of inspiring possibilities for scientists to accelerate their AI research or HPC codes, the hackathon provided opportunities for solving research problems and expanding expertise using NVIDIA GPU parallel computing technology.
NVIDIA’s GPU Technology Conference (GTC) is right around the corner, promising to be one the premier conferences of 2021. Starting April 12th with the keynote from Jensen Huang, NVIDIA founder and CEO, this year’s digital GTC is pulling out all stops to spotlight the latest and greatest innovations, provide technical deep dives and deliver critical training across a wide range of topics from accelerated computing to deep learning.
It has been one year since the start of the pandemic and as the world continues to adjust to the “new normal” of remote collaboration, Simon Fraser University (SFU) kicked off the first GPU hackathon of 2021. Eight teams from 13 institutions representing various scientific domains across computational fluid dynamics, climate modeling, physics, molecular genetics, hydrology and chemistry, participated in the digital event.

In September 2020, the fifth GPU hackathon took place in Germany. Like previous events, it was jointly organised by the Helmholtz Centre Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC), OpenACC and NVIDIA; however, unlike the past, this was a fully online event because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
COVID-19 has vastly impacted every aspect of life and work, but even with the very changed landscape of face-to-face collaboration and interaction, the scientific community continues to drive advancements forward.
The first completely digital GPU Hackathon with the San Diego Supercomputer Center successfully concluded on May 13th, marking a new chapter in the evolution of the hackathon program.
